"Is My Professor Biased?"

Is My Professor Biased?

college staff building, a place where your professor might teach Since you are reading this page, you might be wondering: “Is my professor biased?” Well, fret no longer, and instead read on as we lay out some simple tips to recognize if your professor is biased.

My School and Teacher

An easy starting point to understanding college staff bias is to simply look at what class you are taking. Subjects like Math, and Science are often based more in fact than interpretation, and are thus less likely to be subject to biased teaching habits. The following is a list of subjects that are frequently taught by liberal teachers:

Sociology-Sociology is the study of Society, and what you will find is that a class which places blame on society doesn’t tend to care much about personal responsibility. You will see a good deal of the following: System blame theories. Theories that blame society and its institutions for social problems such as racism gender inequality, and poverty. (source academics.triton.edu/) Most sociologists believe that society is the cause and answer to all problems, thereby leading professors in this department to believe that Socialism is the only cure. Sociology calles individual resonsiblity "blaming the victim." This means that every criminal was driven to be a criminal by society and not by choice. Sociology, if I can speak freely, is a very warped subject matter, and perhaps the single most biased subject one can take in college. If your professor tells you that giving more power to the government so they can help people is a good idea…you likely have a liberal professor.

History-History is a spin zone in college. Your school and teacher are telling you one thing, and history itself may be telling you another. A personal example from one of my professors was the statement, "America was imperialistic and simply wanted to take over Cuba..." I felt that we were not imperialistic and simply wanted to help garner Cuban independence. If my professor was right, then we would be in possession of Cuba today! The truth is that we fought for them, and within 5 years Cuba was independent. Don't be afraid to ask yourself the question, “Is my professor intentionally saying things to make the U.S. look bad?” Most professors want you to believe that the United States is the most degenerated country on earth; and the only way to change is bigger government or more government control.

Literature-This one is all about the teacher again. If you get a teacher that just wants you to read good literature, consider yourself lucky. Often times, your professor will have you reading Marx and Friedan before they have you reading Marlow and Fielding. The subversion can be subtle with literature professors. Generally, literature can be the realm of some hold outs who still think it’s the summer of love. Look at the reading list and make a determination from there.

This is only a small list of subjects, but most humanities classes are subject to bias, so be aware and check the professor list regularly.
