According to Bob Unruh of WorldNetDaily, Hallam asked students to complete an essay with the basic intent of mocking Sarah Palin and the Republican Party:
The assignment was just one issue that several students raised. Hallam, who previously told students he expected them to be "courteous," assigned an essay about Palin's nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.A student named Janna Barber came forward with information about Hallam, and his extreme liberal bias, which lead to a maelstrom of media attention. Barber, and other students, mentioned how Hallam maintained that “Bush bashing” was one of his favorite past times, and that the professor was frequently vulgar, showing a preference for the “F-word.”"Arguably, the entire event was designed to present Sarah Palin in an idealized – indeed, as if her life is like a fairy tale in which America could be included if she is voted into office with John McCain," he wrote in a copy of the assignment provided to WND by students. "Note her body language, facial expressions, the way she dressed, what she said and who she pointed out or talked about in her speech. How do these elements form a 'fairy tale' image about Sarah Palin as a person and as a politician that the Republican Party may wish its members and the American public to believe? How may the story 'Sleeping Beauty' and/or Tanith Lee's 'Awake' be used to compare the image of Palin with fairy tales, especially as they portray women, their behavior, and their lives?"
He said students should find commentaries that criticize Palin.
"Using clear reasoning, explain how these sources may undermine or otherwise paint a different picture of Palin as a person and as a politician than what she or the Republican Party may wish the American public to believe," he said.
CBS4Denver is also reporting:
Barber and another student appeared on KOA's Mike Rosen talk show Thursday to discuss the issue. The “F-you” is apparently in regard to Mr.Hallam asking the Republican students in his class to raise their hands, at which time a student shouted “F-You” at them, which met with no response of defense from Mr.Hallam. Not surprisingly Metro State came out to support Hallam, who was cleared of any wrong doing by the university. Andrew Hallam, you are the reason kids are so stupid these days. You are beacon of ignorance in an already moronic world. When the kids you have inspired to become Communists take over this country…I hope they take over your house, your money, and your life first.
"I said something to him like, 'well, there may be five of us, but we're ready to debate this and he cussed us out," student Ben Faurer said Thursday. "He's trying to avoid all this, go along like nothing is happening." "The F-you should definitely not be said to them," fellow student Alyson Brooks said Thursday.
